"Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves."
Romans 12:10 NIV
Are there any unresolved conflicts with people in your life? Do you have expectations of how they will react when you see them?
Whether those expectations are positive or negative, your responsibility is to love people and honor them above yourself. That, my friend, is no small task. Especially if the circumstance is far from ideal or if the person is difficult to love. Ultimately, it's hard to set aside our feelings, to push past what feels unfair or unresolved, don't you think?
So, let's slip into Paul's sandals. He made it a point of trying to understand other's perspectives, even when they stood opposed to him. Paul knew by seeing the world through their eyes—whether it was King Agrippa or the guards or the people he taught the gospel to—he could better represent Christ to them. Like a master craftsman studying his materials, Paul realized that knowing the heart of others gave him the tools to share God's love more effectively. The same works for us.
Our lives, weren't designed to orbit around ourselves.
However, as we mature in our Christian walk, we start to realize we're not the center of the universe. Life isn't always about "me" (which is crazy when you're the youngest sibling like "me" … just saying). The fact is: the tighter we cling to self-centeredness, the smaller our world becomes.
On the other hand, when we let go of our fixation on pronouns like “I” and “me,” we gain greater freedom from our Adamic nature. It's like looking through a telescope: the closer we look, the more we see beyond ourselves—the intricate details of the stars, the grandeur of a galaxy, the magnificence of a Milky Way, even the remarkable rings of Saturn.
So today, let’s use our inner telescope and focus on seeing the best in people. Toss those conflicts into the air and let them spiral to the ground like spiritual confetti. "Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves" (Romans 12:10 NIV), and extend to others the benefit of the doubt. Not only will we gain a better perspective, but we'll represent Christ in a more authentic way. Isn't that what life is all about, or better yet, isn't that what our world truly needs? Love!
Heavenly Father,
When things feel unresolved, help me not to hold onto the hurt. Soften my heart and open my eyes to truly see things from the other person’s perspective. Let my inner telescope focus on the good in them—the beauty You’ve placed in each of us. I want to love deeply and honor others, even when it’s hard, just as Jesus taught us. In Jesus' name. Amen.
