“In this world, you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."
John 16:33 NKJV
A friend once asked, "If God rules the universe, why does He allow bad things to happen? Why are there diseases, conflicts, and deceit ... hardships in marriages and jealousy in the workplace? Why do politicians, the corporate world, even people in the ministry feel the need to steal the rungs from someone else's ladder? And wars, why do we have senseless wars?” As my friend hurled each 'why' at me, I scrambled for an answer, and despite it all, the drawers of my mind flew open and slammed shut, each one as empty as the last.
I could relate. The questions were legitimate and have plagued humanity since the dawn of time. The Bible makes it clear life isn't always a stroll down Cotton Candy Lane. Sad but true. You see, we are physical beings navigating through a broken world, easily swayed by earthly desires.
The Bible holds stories filled with flawed individuals grappling with free will. For instance, Sarah’s envy toward Hagar wove strife within her family. Joseph’s brothers, driven by jealousy, spun dark deeds against him. Let's not forget David's sin with Bathsheba, Samson's downfall, or the beheading of John the Baptist. Talk about revealing the murky depths of human nature. Yet, amid these stories of bad choices, suffering, and struggles, there stands Jesus—God in the flesh—perfect and sinless. You see, Jesus healed the sick, loved the broken, and confronted corruption. Still, He faced unimaginable sufferings.
Why?
Why does God allow bad things to happen? Is it our choices? Our Adamic nature? Our freewill? I don’t really know, especially when you realize bad things can and do happen to good people. God has a reason for it all. So, with that being said, what I do know: Jesus is the epitome of love and goodness. He bled and died on the cross for our sins, rose from the grave three days later, and walked back into the world to preach and teach the Gospel. Our beautiful God sees the bigger picture. He sees the "why" of things and knows the end before we do. Until we begin to see ourselves and the world through the lens of the Holy Spirit, we will remain disoriented, confused, even frustrated and tormented by life's trials.
Beloved, read God's Word, pray for wisdom and clarity. So, whether life has you standing at the intersection of Cotton Candy Lane and Grimstone Boulevard, let God's will guide your steps in faith and allow His Spirit to lead and enlighten your choices. Jesus promises us: "In this world, you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world" (John 16:33 NKJV). Dear friend, this reigning promise is the answer to every "why" imaginable.
Heavenly Father,
I may not always understand the "whys" of life's challenges, but I trust You are with me. Just as You were with Jesus on Calvary Hill from which the miracle of salvation emerged. Bless me with the strength and wisdom to follow Your plan and allow me to always remember that You have overcome the world. In Jesus' name. Amen.
