“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Rom 8:28 NKJV
Have you ever doubted God? Yes? We've all experienced that Adamic moment where our human side says, “I cannot walk on water, nor can I move a mountain. As for the mustard seed, I have enough problems with my own dying plants.” So, when doubt enters your world, remember “… we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” (Rom 8:28 NKJV).
While reading Luke 1:5-20, Zacharias's doubt had my eyes glued to the Bible. He and his wife, Elizabeth, had prayed for years to conceive. But they had grown old and given up all hope of having a child. Then God sent Gabriel, the angel, to inform Zacharias that his wife would bear a son, and they were to name him John. Zacharias presented his doubt by asking, “How shall I know this?” The angel muted him until the day Zacharias's son, John, was born.
During that time, Zacharias couldn't utter a sound. Not one syllable. Think about it. People in those days did not carry pen and paper or cellphones. No one texted or emailed. They did, however, use a small piece of thin wood coated in wax, which they called a writing tablet. That tablet was probably about as convenient to use as navigating the desert with a map made of mirages.
Undoubtedly, though, when the baby was born and circumcision day rolled around, everyone expected the child to be named after his father. However, Elizabeth, the baby's mother, said otherwise. Therefore, to confirm the baby's name, Zacharias motioned for a writing tablet. With a stylus in hand, he etched the child's name—John. At that point, Zacharias' speech returned.
Beloved, we have no clue why God does what He does. Sometimes tough love is the only love a person understands. Zacharias learned a bittersweet lesson with the birth of his precious baby. This baby grew up to be John the Baptist and played a significant role in God's plan of redemption. John baptized Jesus and was an instrumental part of revealing our Messiah. Clearly, the Lord's hand had been upon John before conception.
You know, we all doubt from time to time. Even the strongest have doubts. It's inevitable. However, when we doubt our omniscient God, do we destroy His plan? Not at all. Instead, it diminishes our ability to cherish and express our love to Him—the Almighty—who knows our every need in a world overwhelmed with skepticism.
Heavenly Father,
Even when my doubts are strong and my faith is weak, I thank You for Your unconditional love. You are there through every doubt and failure. Lord, help me to always believe that Your power goes beyond anything I've ever seen or known. May I always remember that all things work together for good to those who love You. In Jesus' name. Amen.
