Engaging today's teens with
America's yesterday
“....forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.”
Phil 3:13 KJV
Every day God entrusts us with the precious gift of twenty-four—unlived, unplanned, unexplained, unexplored—hours. Whether it turns out to be a good day or a challenging day, countless possibilities and promising opportunities await. Even when faced with the unexpected, we can trust God to lead us.
As the twenty-four hours expire, yesterday transforms into a mere memory. So, instead of bannering your yesterdays across the forefront of your mind, embrace the truth that your tick has tocked, and welcome another new day with open arms. Never allow the shadows of bad days to haunt your surroundings.
Why? Because God controls the sand in your emotional hourglass. He does not want you to trespass into the ghost fields of yesterday. In simpler terms, forge ahead and allow God to bury your ugly beneath His nail-pierced hands.
Consider the journey of Paul as he walked the road to Damascus. A sudden, intense light blinded him, reflecting the haunted yesterdays of a man once known as Saul, a man who committed horrific things against innocent people. When God used Ananias to restore Paul's sight, the transformed Paul went forth to preach the gospel and left his haunted yesterdays in God’s hands.
After his transformation, Paul faced numerous trials. He was stoned and left for dead in Lystra (Acts 14:19), shipwrecked three times (2 Cor. 11:25), floated a day and night in the open sea (2 Cor 11:25), and thrice beaten with rods (Acts 16:22-25). Do not forget, Paul was imprisoned long enough to write Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon, all the while singing praises to our God. The apostle laid his ugly yesterdays in our Lord’s hands.
You see, Beloved, our God can take your worst memory and turn it into a breathtaking blessing. Let go and let the Master transform you through His saving grace. Surrender your troubled past to the One who loves you, to the One who knows your future, to the One who desires to walk hand in hand with you.
God's spectrum of mercy and grace is as immeasurable as the rainbow. He’ll entomb your haunted yesterdays beneath the cross, “...forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before” (Phil 3:13 KJV). Embrace each new day with the assurance that God is in control.
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for leading me to the cross, for nailing my haunted yesterdays beneath your nail-scarred hands. May you always remind me to stress less, trust more, and have faith like the apostle Paul. In Jesus' name. Amen.

2. As the devotion concludes, consider the ways of “forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before…” as mentioned in Philippians 3:13?
