“And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, "Oh, that You would bless me indeed,
and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me,
and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!"
1 Chronicles 4:10 NKJV
Let’s talk about Jabez. He’s not a headline act in the Bible—no burning bush, no slaying of giants, no parting of seas, no fiery furnace, no lion's den. In fact, Jabez's story is buried within a long list of names in 1 Chronicles. Yet, despite his brief mention, Jabez stands out for one bold and heartfelt prayer.
As we slip into Jabez's sandals, we find out the Bible doesn’t give us much information. We learn his name means "pain" or "sorrow," which suggests he came into the world with a bit of a rough start. His mother literally named him "pain." Imagine living with that! However, instead of letting his name or circumstances define him, Jabez turned to God with one simple but profound request:
“Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!" (1 Chronicles 4:10 NKJV).
What’s so remarkable here is Jabez’s approach to God. He didn’t ask timidly; he went boldly, asking for blessing, for growth, for God’s protection, and God would keep him from evil and he would not cause pain. Guess what? God granted his request. Jabez teaches us it's okay to ask God for big things, even when we feel small, overlooked, or unworthy. Jabez did not let his circumstances define him, nor did he believe that his life had to be limited by the name or label he’d inherited. Remarkable, right?
Jabez’s prayer wasn’t just about expanding his land; nope. It was a request for a life that stretched beyond his circumstances. His story reminds us that when we pray with a genuine heart—seeking His guidance and blessing—God listens. Jabez asked for more than he had—and he received it! Why? Because he trusted God’s goodness over his own limitations.
Precious one, don’t be afraid to ask God for more. Not more stuff, but more impact, more growth, and more of His presence. If God answered Jabez, He can and will answer you. Sometimes all it takes is a bold prayer and the courage to believe that God’s plans are bigger than our names, our titles, or our pasts.
Heavenly Father,
I come to You with a bold heart. Enlarge my territory and use my life for Your purposes. Keep Your hand upon me, protect me from harm, and free me from any pain that holds me back. I trust in Your goodness and ask for Your blessing. In Jesus' name. Amen.
